A Story Is Told // We’re No Longer Slaves to Fear

We are No Longer slaves

A story is told…

I love stories. They have a way of encouraging, uplifting, drawing us in and even simplifying complex matters. Jesus is a master storyteller. His is still The Greatest Story Ever Told.

In this occasion Jesus is giving his famous Sermon on the Mount.

In Matthew 6: 25 – 34, Jesus addresses worry, which I think is the same as fear. Is it? When you worry about something, do you became afraid? Are you filled with fear? In the previous verses (19) – he talks about putting our treasures in heaven where moth and rust cannot destroy.

In verse 25 he tells the people not to be afraid of what they’ll eat or wear since life is much more than this. He knew what fear could do to us. Cause us to be stuck, restless and even give up our faith.

On various occasions in the bible, he tells his disciples not to be afraid. During a storm in Matthew 14:22-36, Jesus tells Peter to “come”. For a few minutes or seconds Peter is comfortable walking on water but then something happens.

He looks at the wind and starts to tremble. His focus shifts from Jesus to the surroundings. He is sinking. He cries out for help. Jesus comes to the rescue and asks him, “why did you doubt?’

In the Beatitudes – Jesus tells the people that they are much more valuable than birds of the air, which the Father graciously provides for all their needs. How much more will he take care of his them?

I must admit that I have been afraid more times than I would’ve liked. I wanted so much to believe but I couldn’t. I let fear take control of my life. I worried about things – money, work, the future. The funny thing is that nothing positive came out of worrying. I ended up stressing my self.

Jesus concludes his sermon by telling them to seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness and “all these things shall be given to you as well”.

I am reminded of the song No Longer Slaves  by Bethel. I love these words, “I’m no longer a slave to fear // I am a child of God”

Romans 8:15 [NIV] says, ‘For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of Sonship.

Fear makes us slaves. It holds us back from stepping out. From THRIVING. But God through Jesus has adopted us and made us heirs together with Christ. He’s our Abba, Father. Our heavenly Father and if He can take care of the birds & lilies – how much will care for us?

“I’m no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God”
